William IV, dated December 21 1831 1831 Silkwork Sampler by Ann Shawcross. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and non-reflection glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. Colours black, cream, gold, pink, greens and copper. Verse reads ''May we be taught how frail our beings are Young as I am with pilgrim feet,> And as this life is short, for death prepare, Father I travel to thy seat,> Make not this world the object of our love, And leaning on my saviour s hand,> But fix our thoughts alone on things above, Prepare to leave this barren land> Let children that would fear the Lord, If thou my Jesus still art nigh,> Hear what teachers say,> Cheerful I live and joyful die,> With revrence meet their parents word, Secure when mortal comforts flee,> And with delight obay To find ten thousand world in thee,''. Signed and dated ''Decr 21 Ann Shawcross the Daughter of John and Elizabeth Shawcross 1831''. A good set of motifs, including a large estate house, potted flowering plants, fruit basket, crown, castles and fir trees. Generally Good. A few holes. A few stains. Some stitch losses to the verse, fence and from above the house. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 14.75ins by 16.25ins wide
