Victorian, dated 1842 1842 Silkwork Mourning Sampler by Rachel Sinker. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and non-reflection glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering leafy border. Colours browns, black, greens, pink, cream and gold. Verse entitled ''Rachel weeping for her Children'' reads ''A voice comes from Ramah, a voice of despair,> For death''s gloomy angel is triumphing there;> The children of beauty his arrows have smote,> And Rachel is weeping for her''s that are not.> Alas for the parent whose hope and whose trust> Are wither''d and broken, and hid in the dust!> Where the blossom of summer all lovely appears> But the dewdrops of evening are mingled with tears.> A voice comes from Ramah, a voice of dismay,> But the words of Jehovah can sooth it away:> They tell of a region where grief is forgot,> And Rachel is solaced for those that are not.'' Signed and dated ''Rachel Sinker 1842''. A few motifs including birds, flowers and tigers. Generally Good. A number of holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Colour run around the black threads. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Sampler overframed on three sides. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 16.5ins by 14.5ins wide
