George III, dated 1809 1809 Silkwork Sampler by Susanna Hides. Framed in a wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with linen backing and brown paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. Colours gold, cream, light brown, dark brown, pink, light green, magenta, olive green and blue. Alphabet A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Verse reads ''Virtues the chiefest beauty of the mind> The noblest ornament of human kind> Virtues our safeguard and our guiding star> That stirs up reason when our senses err''. Signed and dated ''Susanna Hides October 4 1809''. Packed with motifs, including fruit trees, a dog, a house, flowers, stags, fruit baskets, squirrels, potted flowering plants, birds, diamonds, fir trees, strawberries, butterfly, tree laden with blossom and a lady standing beside a sailing ship. Fair. A number of holes, and the ground is very thin and worn in places. Some dark, patchy staining to the lower half. Some stitch losses to the border and divider lines, as well as the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Unevenly stretched. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang. 16.25ins by 12.5ins wide
