British Lead Fire Mark, The Royal Exchange 1720-1838 - For Sale

British Lead Fire Mark, The Royal Exchange 1720-1838
Price: $350.00
This painted lead fire mark, depicting the Royal Exchange Building, is from the Royal Exchange Assurance of Houses and Goods from Loss by Fire. Founded by royal charter in 1720 and itself ravaged by fire and destroyed in 1838. The fire mark was invented for the purpose of and used as a guide for the insurance sponsered fire brigades. If the brigade arrived on the scene and found that their office did not insure the risk, as evidenced by the absence of an appropriate fire mark, they went home again. A true historic curiosity. In excellent condition. The lead has darkened with some paint losses and flaking. H:9" W: 4" Circa 1800
