Antique Sultanabad, Persia, circa 1900 - A striking allover design of arabesque medallions and sprawling vines with palmettes in ivory, lavender, yellow, and soft green spreads across the rich terracotta field of this supremely beautiful antique Sultanabad. Despite the grand scale and sweep of the design, the rendering of the forms is delicate and animated. The various major and minor vinescroll borders are much smaller in scale and denser in their configuration, providing the perfect contrast for the field. The palette of this carpet with its exceptionally clear and saturated dyes is outstanding, even among Sultanabads that are famed for their color.
