Historical Context: These coins were minted in Asia Minor by the Persian Empire about the late 6th Century BC to early the 5th Century BC. At the time, Persia was the vast empire to the east of the Greek World. Western Asia Minor was the birthplace of coinage (about 620 BC). The Persians invaded about 546 BC initially copying the existing Lydian coinage. This coin is the first of the Persian-style coinage issued by the Persians in Asia Minor. The Persian occupation of Asia Minor was the historical event that eventually led to Alexander the Great's invasion of Persia in response.
