Bronze Follis of Emperor Licinius - C.4741 - For Sale

Bronze Follis of Emperor Licinius - C.4741
Price: $150.00
Bronze Follis of Emperor Licinius - C.4741 Origin: Mediterranean Circa: 308 AD to 324 AD Collection: Numismatics Style: Roman Medium: Bronze This well-preserved coin in fine condition was struck for the emperor Licinius. Coinage operates as a propagandist device in all cultures, and particularly during the Roman Empire when the borders were uncertain and internal strife threatened to destabilise the economy. The iconography shows the emperor with Sol, the pagan god of the sun. This association is slightly ironic bearing in mind that he fought under the banner of Christians, although Sol enjoyed considerable popularity in the more conservative bastions of the empire. The globe could be interpreted as representing Licinius’ military ambitions.
