STATELY ELEGANCE!
Artus Van Briggle and Anne Gregory were both accomplished artists studying in Paris in the early 1890s when they met. Artus was fascinated with the matte glaze from the Chinese Ming dynasty. He visited the United States and worked for the Rockwood Pottery Company in Cincinnati. Later he began a pursuit to recreate the ancient Chinese process. Artus left Ohio in 1899 and moved to Colorado Springs, there he spent two years experimenting and perfecting the lost Chinese matte glaze finish. By 1901, having discovered the secret of the glaze, Anne joined Artus and they formed Van Briggle Pottery.
Van Briggle Pottery & Tile is one of the oldest active art potteries in the United States, and has been considered one of the great American potteries. For over 100 years Van Briggle Pottery has been creating world renowned art pottery. In fact, Van Briggle pieces are in the permanent collection in several major art museums, such as the British Museum in London, the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the Louvre in Paris. People of every social class and many different cultures have appreciated its elegance and beauty
This Van Briggle Art Pottery Vase is quite tall, with a warm honey brown color body, a light green over sprayed mouth and is finished in a high gloss glaze. It is a lovely piece with a bell shaped base that graduates into a larger center and even wider mouth. The beautiful light green lacy overspray accents the top of the vase, while simple line borders add definition. The vase is charming by itself, however adding a bouquet of flowers or a dried arrangement will create a spectacular display.
The bottom is incised with the Van Briggle logo, which is the two A’s joined together. It is signed with “Van Briggle Colo Spgs” and the Capital Letter “A” on the bottom.
CONDITION: Excellent to Near Mint! There are no chips, cracks, scratches on this vase. Some slight crazing which is common with this type of glazing and the estimated age of the piece. The high gloss shine helps to conceal the crazing you have to look closely to see any imperfections. See Photos.
MEASUREMENTS: 12" tall x 5.25" diameter at the top. 4" diameter base.
As the pictures will confirm, this is truly a beautiful piece sure to be a favorite, with many more years of use to grace any home.
