Wedgwood Basalt Cream & Lidded Sugar Set Marked - For Sale
Wedgwood Basalt Cream & Lidded Sugar Set Marked
From the Philadelphia Main Line estate of a former Wedgwood Museum staffer, a basalt cream and lidded sugar in very good condition. This set defies dating. The bottom of the sugar is impressed Wedgwood, 9 P and maybe a numeral 7. There is no impressed 'England' or 'made in England'. Given the legal requirement that pottery be marked with the country of manufacture enacted in 1891, the implication is that these pieces are pre-1891. The design certainly, according to the wedgwood web site, is that of "classical 18th century Queensware". But I can't believe the pieces do not date to the 1950's. Condition is very good. Light wear only. Dimensions: the cream is 2 5/8" tall, 3.5" diameter and 5.5" from spout to handle. The sugar: the lid is 3" diameter and 1 7/8" high; the bowl is 2.5" high and 3.5" diameter.
