AN UNUSUAL ENGLISH LUSTRE MARINE PLAQUE, NEWCASTLE, CIRCA 1840-50 The circular plaque with a pink lustre wavy rim has a rare printed center reading: MATE ; ;SOUND THE PUMP MORNING NOON ;& ;NIGHT It is surround by a garland of flowering vines. ;This type of circular plaque is traditionally associated with the Newcastle makers. Dimensions: ;8 1/2 in (22.6 cm) Marks: Impressed mark now impossible to read. ;First letter D. According to the authors of Jack Tar, "The wording on the plaque was of critical importance to the survivability of the ship and those on board. ;It was imperative to know the depth of water in the well of the ship to determine if pumping was necessary. ;Here was a token of life at sea that could be an everyday reminder at home of the perils of the sea".
