Pair Staffordshire cricketer figures
Price: $3105.00
Victorian, circa 1860 Pair Staffordshire cricketer figures, one modeled as a batsman, and the other as a bowler. The pair are matched, but go together very well. The crazing differs slightly. Both wearing floral shirts and orange caps, with the stumps on one side and their jackets draped on the other side. Old dull mercurial gilt line to bases, with decoration to shirts and jackets. Good creamy glaze. Vent hole to reverses. Similar pair illustrated figure 3302/3303, page 289, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. The batsman is thought to represent Julius Caesar, who played for Surrey for many years and also in the All England Eleven from 1849, with which he went to America and Australia. Batsman: Good. No hairlines. Minor paint losses to shirt. Gilt slightly rubbed. Kiln effects: over glazed manufacture chip to reverse of foot rim. Shrinkage crack to his right knee and below his belt on the right side of the figure. Repair to his neck. Bowler: Good. Minor flaking to middle finger of left hand, left sleeve, and front of base. Gilt slightly rubbed. Kiln effects: shrinkage crack between feet. Shrinkage line to both sides of neck and left shoulder, and between the stumps. Minor crazing, which is very slightly stained on the reverse. Minor retouching to paint losses. 14ins high
