Victorian, circa 1860 Staffordshire clock group entitled ''V. RIFLES'' in raised dull gilt capitals. Two soldiers stand either side of a clock face, which has a drum, bugle and two flags resting on top. Two legs and two arms are molded free. Dull gilt decoration and clock hands. Vent hole to reverse. This figure was produced in 1860 in response to the Anglo-French war scare. Over 13,000 Volunteer Rifles were enlisted, and were reviewed by Queen Victoria in Hyde Park. Similar piece illustrated figure 883, page 247, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding. Good. Hairline to reverse of one soldier''s neck. No chips. Some small paint losses to the ground, gun, grapes, waist bag and strap, and rim of drum. Rubbing to gilt. Kiln effects: shrinkage crack to one side of grapes; small firing pit to side of base; overall crazing. Restoration to neck and hat of one soldier. 11.75ins high
