William IV, dated January 20 1832 1832 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Slade. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Triangles border. Colours black, olive green, cream, light green, dark green and gold. Verse entitled ''A thought on Waking'' reads ''Sleep by night, and cares by day,> Bear my fleeting life away:> Lo! In yonder eastern skies,> The sun appears, and bids me rise:> Tells me, life is on the wing,> And has no returning spring;> Death comes on with steady pace,> And life''s the only day of grace.> Wisdom, Virtue, Knowledge, Truth,> Guide th''enquiries of my youth.> Wisdom and experience sage,> Then shall soothe the cares of age;> These with time shall never die;> Those will lead to joys on high;> Those the path of life display,> Shining with celestial day:> Blissful path! With safety trod,> The end of which is heav''n and God.''. Signed and dated ''Mary Slade Aged 19 Years January 20 1832''. A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, flowers, fruit trees, fruit baskets, crowns, two houses, diamonds, butterflies and birds. Good. A number of small holes. A few small, patchy stains. Minor stitch loss to the border in the bottom left corner. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition. Wire and hooks included for hanging. 16.25ins by 13ins wide
