Antique sterling silver brooch in the form of a bird in the Victorian, Egyptian Revival style, made circa 1870-80. Measures just under 2 1/4 inches long. Weighs 5.8 grams. Marvellous shape in openwork silver: the bird manages to combine both naturalistic and stylised elements, easilly identifiable, yet with long, curving wings, concentric patterned arches depicting feathers, reverse series of very Egyptian style smaller wing shapes closer to the body and a bottom that spreads out and curls around, ending in scrolls, signifying the tail. Fine modelled head and detail including eyes. Original secure clasp and pin. Hallmarked 925 for Sterling silver on the back. Good condition.
