19th century brooch or pin, large twin medallion lava cameo, with one white head and one black one. Gold mount. Very good high relief detail to the two cameos. Lava cameos were popular 18th and 19th century souvenirs of trips to Italy - the lava came from Mt. Vesuvius or sometimes Mt. Etna. Brooch measures 56 mm wide by 33 mm high. The cameos are each 27 mm wide by 33 mm high. The clasp has been repaired at some time - the pin is a typical very long one (not gold), but the hook and the hinge area show repair. The face of the brooch is in very good condition, no damage to the cameos although there is a little grey patch in the carving above the helmet peak of the black cameo (to the far right side). Very attractive, unusual antique brooch.
