This elegantly shaped pectoral pendant with delicate filigree loop and border, marangga, is from the Babar Island, South Moluccas. Used as bride wealth payment, it possesses sacred qualities and is part of the adat heirloom valuables.
Originally made in gold, silver was first introduced to Southeast Maluku in the 16-17th C in the form of silver dollars.
This piece is one of the finest example of the ornaments that found throughout the archipelago which shares many similar form.
It measures 3-2/8†wide by 2-1/8†high. 16 grams. Late 20th Century.
