SOLD Antique Polish combat mace Buzdygan 17th century Poland. DETAILS: A hand forged pear -shaped steel head formed of six sturdy flanges with an integral socket of octagonal section , surmounted by domed ribbed brass central finial, on its octagonal wooden haft, the base fitted with a brass ribbed rosette .

This form of the flanged maces, or winged maces, where the head of the mace is divided into "feathers - flanges” (usually six or eight) were very popular in Eastern Europe, known as the Polish Buzdygan, Hungarian Buzogány ,Ukrainian Pernach (пірна́ч) Russian Shestoper (Шестопер). These were used as battle weapons and bared by a colonel as a symbol of rank, and a sign of the officer's authority, as the commander of the Polish, Hungarians, Russians, Don Cossacks and Ukrainians Cossacks, during the 16th-18th century.

These maces were made of many different varieties and styles; this particular iron head is very similar to the head of 17th century Polish Mace- Buzdygan, published in the Polish book Leksykon broni bialej i miotajacej by W. Kwasniewicz: page 47. (Please see the picture attached to the listing) And also in the book Bron w dawnej Polsce na tle uzbrojenia Europy i Bliskiego Wschodu by Zdzislaw Zygulski. Figure: 150. Please see the picture attached to the listing. The Buyer will be provided with copies of the pages from the mentioned books.

MEASUREMENTS: Overall length: 51 cm (20 in). Height of the iron head including socket: 16 cm (6 5/8 in).

CONDITION: In its original condition showing the age and usage with a dark patina. The wooden hafts on the combat maces were often broken and frequently replaced so we can determinate if the wood haft is original to the iron head or is a later replacement.
