Antique Kashan, Persia, early twentieth centuryA lush allover design of flowering vines and palmettes winds a sinuous path across the rich burgundy field of this luxuriant antique Kashan. Despite its enormous complexity and variation, the design is symmetrical and balanced, with an air of dignified formality. The main border is composed of different elements, large burgundy rosettes set on a deep blue ground. Although this reverses the palette of the field, it still maintains a harmonious unity with it. The sparing use of ivory as tiny accents across the entire surface makes the carpet appear to sparkle, along with the luminosity of the lush pile.
