Antique Konya Rug - Turkey, mid nineteenth century Though one might not at first recognize them as such, a pattern of angular rosettes or flowers in ivory, blue, and brown floats in nicely spaced rows on the rich saffron field of this classic antique 'yellow ground' Konya. Smaller quartered diamonds fill out the intervening spaces of the field. The same diamonds recur as the border set against a brown ground. This piece exemplified the bold, graphic drawing and stunning color for which early Konya carpets are so prized nowadays. The brown, in true nomadic tradition, is made from un-dyed natural wool, and so it is thick and meaty, unlike the cored brown one mostly encounters on antique rugs.
