An impressive Tokoname by Yamada Jozan I(1868-1942), the founder of the Yamada Kiln, first in a family line of renowned potters that continues till today, grandfather of Yamada Jozan III(1924-2005),a National Treasure of Japan and the most famous
disciple of Sugie Jumon(1828-1897), who is credited with initiating production of wares with the burnished finish.

A swirling, formidable three-toed dragon emerges through the clouds, its menacing expression awe-inspiring. Its writhing body surrounding the vase amidst the clouds.

Artist Signed, 'Dai Nihon Tokoname-sho, ryu ko hoso sei', 'From Great Japan Tokoname Kiln, Dragon work finely rendered', with the small cartouche 'Yamada Jozan Master'.

Meiji Period, circa 1900.

Dimensions : H 18.30in/46.5cm, Diameter 8.46in/21.5cm and quite heavy at around 17.6lbs/8kgr.
