This pair of corbels depict the face of Bacchus. Covered in a semi-transluscent blue glaze over a red clay, these are very Arts and Crafts. Made to hold up a mantel over a fireplace, these can just as well be mounted to hold a shelf in a kitchen, bath, garden, or wine cellar. Although unmarked, this distinctive clay was used by three companies during this period; Mueller Mosaic of Trenton New Jersey, the Mosaic Tile Company and the American Encaustic Tile Company of Zanesville Ohio. These were never installed, but have a few chips to the high points. One with a chip to the nose and beard, the other with a chip to the ear. A wonderful and rare set. This large panel by Harris Strong consists of six six inch tiles in a conch shell design. The tiles sit atop a peach linen matte and is housed in a painted wooden frame. The thick glazes on the tiles are bubbly and dimensional. This is from Strong''s later period, after his move to Maine. The influence of the sea shore certainly shows on this piece. It is a perfect accent for a beach house, or pool or bath. The condition is excellent. The wood frame shows a few light scuffs. ( These are more commonly found in a 4.25 inch version). The design is applied in squeezebag, so it was a very labor intensive process to outline and color the entire tile by hand.
