This Victorian tile was designed by Arthur Osborne and although this same image can be seen on tiles marked J. and J.G Low, this one is unmarked and was probably made at the Trent Tile Company of Trenton New Jersey. It depicts an old bearded Jewish man in a yamulke. It is known in the trade as the Shylock tile. Molded in a very high relief, the condition is excellent, with only a tiny nick to the eyebrow. This beautiful antique tile panel dates from the mid 1800''s. It consists of five tiles, a central medallion surrounded by four borders. The true majolica glaze colors are bright and vibrant. With it''s ecclesiastic design, it''s original intent was probably for a church. It has been professionally mounted and framed in a gold and cherry finish. The faces of the tiles are unworn, with no scuffing the the glossy glazes. There is minimal chipping at some of the tile edges.
