This is a superb pair of quality 18th century American Chippendale mahogany side chairs from the historic Murray Family of New York City. Each with a shaped crest rail centering a carved shell above a pierced ''diamond'' carved and pierced splat. The trapezoidal slip seat is above the gadrooned seat rail, with the whole supported on a cabriole legs with shell carved knees and claw and ball feet. Primary Wood: Mahogany Secondary Wood: Oak, Pine Height: 38 in., seat 17 3/4 in. Width 20 1/4 in. - Depth 16 3/4 in. Reference: These chairs are shown in a nineteenth century print of Mrs. Mary Lindley Murray entertaining General Howe while the American army under General Israel Putnam escaped from Manhattan. Provenance: Robert Murray (1721-1786) and Mary (Lindley Murray) (d.1780), New York City; John Murray (1758-1819), their son; Robert I. Murray (1786-1858), son; Caroline (Murray) Ferris (1813-1852), daughter; Robert M. Ferris (d. 1905), son; Caroline Murray (Ferris) Neave, daughter. This is a superb rare pair of 18th century American Queen Anne highly-figured bold tiger maple New England rush side chairs. The tall elegant bold tiger maple backs are complimented with tasteful blocked and turned front legs, simple bulbous turned front and side stretchers ending in solid one piece superbly carved Spanish feet. Each chair is joined with mortise and tenon construction throughout. The refined Spanish feet are carved from the solid, NOT pieced out. This attention to labor and detail was an active procedureof craftsmanship associated with the Gaines schoolin Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Although worn in areas, each chair appears to retain a substantial amount of its original surface. Mellow nut brown amber patina. Attributed origin: Eastern Massachusetts or coastal New Hampshire Circa: 1740-1760. Height: 41'' Each chair has survived in a superb state of preservation. Overall excellent condition, without any damage to the Spanish carved feet. « Less

This is a lovely fine American mid 18th century Queen Anne maple Fussel-Savery Philadelphia school rush seat side chair. It has survived in an excellent state of preservation with one very old repair to the back on the reverse side of the top crest yoke. It has a warm mellow nut brown patina..
