George III, dated 1818 1818 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Vyse. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and glass. Stitched to paper and loose mounted with wooden backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, blue, green, dark brown, gold, copper and olive green. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-6. Verse reads ''Sweet bud of Mary''s bosom go> And live beneath her eye> There in the sun of beauty blow> Or taste of heaven and die''. Signed and dated ''Mary Ann Vyse Aged 10 1818''. A good set of motifs, including fir trees, potted flowering plants and fruit baskets. Generally Good. No holes. A number of stains and specks. Some stitch losses to the alphabets, number 1, verse and signature. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Unevenly stretched. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Strawberry border. Colours pale blue, pink, cream and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-15. Verse entitled ''A Rule of Life'' reads ''Fear God, let Prudence admonish thee, let Temperance restrain, let Justice guide thy Hand,> Benevolence warm thy Heart, and Gratitude to Heaven, inspire thee with Devotion. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours green, yellow, copper, brown and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case, numbers 1-10, and family initials. Verse reads ''Seize, mortal! Backed with linen, with newspaper and wallpaper glued to the reverse. The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours olive green, blue, pale blue, black, pink, light green, orange, peach and red. Verse reads ''The year rolls round and steals away> The breath that first it gave> Whateer we do whereer we be> Were travelling to the grave''. Signed and dated ''Ann Hulse 1839''. A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, a bird, rabbit, squirrel, insect, flowers, potted flowering plants, posies, basket of flowers and fir trees. Verse reads ''From the prayer of want and plaint of wee> O never never turn away thine ear> Forlorn in this bleak wilderness below> Ah what were man should Heaven refuse to hear> Toothers do the law is not severe> What to thyself thou wishest to be done> Forgive thy foes and love thy parents dear> And friends and native land nor these alone> All human weal and woe learn thou to make thine own''.
