A large scalloped medallion occupies the center of the field with smaller round one above and below. Meander cornerpieces define a long hexagonal field with stylized openwork shrubs in the intervening blue ground. Successive borders frame the field – an inner vinescroll followed by serial rosettes, and a cloudband main border, with a neutral outer stripe. The reserved precision of the design is matched perfectly by the cool contrasts of gold and blue tones. Antique Silk Yarkand Silk Saph, eighteenth centuryThis spectacular antique Saph or multiple-niche prayer rug is a masterpiece of East Turkestan weaving. Woven with all silk pile, it is luxurious yet elegantly reserved in its design of lobed niches surrounded by a simple vinescroll border system. The spandrels above each niche are different in design and color. The field of the niches in soft green, the color of the Prophet, is used here not only because it is a precious, difficult color to produce, but also as an expression of piety. While this rug has clear signs of wear, it is acceptable given its great age. Indeed, it bears the marks of its long experience like a venerable wise man or warrior. Here we see a prospect of a rural setting with a mountainous vista serving as a backdrop to the village of small houses and yurts or tents fronting onto a small lake or pool.
