Both paintings date from the 1960's and 1 measure approx 29 cm x 37 cm and the other of Chichester Cathedral 28 cm x20. Fred Aris was born in London in 1932 and is regarded as one of the leading lights in the Naive Art Movement in the 20th century. SOLD Exceptional Turkish large watercolor painting depicting the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul through trees, and on one side most probably the column of Constantine. This is truly a work of art very well executed by a true artist, the painting is signed at the lower right corner, but unfortunately the signature cannot be read since it is faded. The first letter appears to be the letter “G”, perhaps someone with knowledge of Turkish art can identify the painter. We do not the history of this painting, except that the painting was purchased by the previous owners 30 years ago in Toronto, Canada at a estate sale, which took place at an exclusive home of the first owner after his death. The second owners had told us that the painting at this time was already old. Since the painting is signed illegibly, and the signature is faded, it is difficult to estimate the date. Considering the trees in the painting, perhaps someone who knows this area of Istanbul, can tell how long ago the trees were of this size, so as to give an approximate time as to when the painting was painted. Please note that this is a real work of art of a large size, and in our opinion had been purchased by the first owner at an art gallery, also the paper is very thick with grain, and is very similar to rice paper (please see the pictures). The painting is with a mat and frame, but without glass. MEASUREMENTS: Dimensions with the frame: 92 x 76.5 cm (36 1/4 inches x 30 1/8 inches). Dimensions of the painting without the mat and the frame: 80.5 cm x 57.5 cm (31 3/4 inches x 22 5/8 inches). Due to the high cost of shipping such a large painting, we suggest that the buyer has the painting sent rolled in a tube, without the frame and mat, to reduce the cost of shipping.
