The Seljuqs, a Turkic dynasty of Central Asian nomadic origins, became the new rulers of the eastern Islamic lands following their defeat of the powerful Ghaznavids at the Battle of Dandanakan (1040). By 1055, the Seljuqs had reached and taken over Baghdad, which put an end to Buyid rule, and established themselves as the new protectors of the Abbasid caliphate and Sunni Islam. Within fifty years, the Seljuqs created a vast though relatively short-lived empire, encompassing all of Iran, Iraq, and much of Anatolia. By the close of the eleventh century, as the Seljuq realm became troubled due to internal conflicts and the division of the realm among heirs, the empire dissolved into separate territories governed by different branches of the dynasty. The main branch of the Seljuq house, the so-called Great Seljuqs, maintained control over Iran. Under the Seljuq sultanate, Iran enjoyed a period of material and cultural prosperity, and the ingenuity in architecture and the arts during this period had a notable impact on later artistic developments.

This is a gorgeous signed bronze oil lamp, by Ernest Rancoulet, from around 1900. He was well known in France, presenting in several salon shows in and around Paris in the late 1800's to early 1900's. He was particularly well known for his Art Nouveau figural works, with detailed attention to facial features and expressions. This is one of those beauties.
"La Jeunesse", French for the youth, is 21" from the marble base to the top of her up stretched arm. In her hand is the original green etched glass and brass oil lamp with original wick. The clear glass flume is new. Upon close examination, you can see there are no cracks, welds, or crazing, rare in an item both old and fragile. The overall height, including lamp and flume is 35".
This item will be professionally packaged for transport, with insurance appropriate to selling price. This is included in the sale price.

FITCHBURG RR LANTERN
This is a 19th century (probably 3rd quarter) RR Lantern for the Fitchburg, Massachusetts line that was in operation from the 1840’s to 1900 when it became part of the Boston and Maine.
It was made by C.T.HAM and has a glass font as seen in our pictures. The heavy glass globe is embossed in relief FRR. The globe has a chip on the base but, cannot be seen when in the lamp and because it’s so thick it will not get any worse. We believe the chip has been there for many decades. The wick turns freely and is in overall good condition. The dome top is brass. The overall height is 12”
THIS IS A GREAT PIECE OF RR HISTORY AND IS QUITE RARE.

You rarely see a lantern that's this old in anywhere near this good of condition and I've never seen one with this quality of engraving.I would never have believed this More »
You rarely see a lantern that's this old in anywhere near this good of condition and I've never seen one with this quality of engraving.I would never have believed this wasn't a replica of a Adam & Westlake conductors lantern dated April 26th 1864 if I hadn't seen it and taken pictures of it before I started cleaning and restoring it.Everything from the wick assembly to the fuel tank and retainer were frozen solid and now everything comes apart easily and the wick turns. The only reason it's in this condition is do to the 100+ year old thick layer of grease from the burner that's kept out any corrosive elements such as oxygen or moisture and it wouldn't let a patina form.If this were to left to form a natural 100 year old patina it would be not only rusted but pitted with all kinds of flaking and damage to the finish. The grease totally preserved it.There's not any scratches or dents anywhere on the lid and it has Musuem quality engraving on it with the name of G.W.Thornburg on the lantern and Geo.W.Thornburg engraved on the two color globe that's also in near mint condition. The globe measure 5" tall.I'm not sure if it's nickel or silver plated. If I can have it tested without dis coloring the finish I'll have it done. There's not any dents or splits in the wire globe guard but the bottom broke and came loose and broke off so I had one made to the exact specifications as the original. It was also missing the latch to close the lid that I'm having made and it along with the bottom piece are being professionally soldered back on.The compression spring in the lid that holds the globe in works perfect and the handle isn't bent or dented. Please see the picture of the parts that come with it.This lantern looks like it just came from the factory and there's not another one that I've ever seen with this quality of artistic engraving.I do know this lantern has not been used since 1898 and it's had the coat of grease I took off of it at least that long.I believe this is the original globe that came with the lantern that was purchased sometime between the 1870's and 1880's.After it was bought the lantern and globe were then taken to a jeweler or blacksmith or both to have the engraving done. The calligraphy on both are very close to being the same font and style.I also think another globe was used with this and the engraved one that's with it now was most likely put up for special events and was hardly ever used as it's also in near mint condition without any chips or cracks..I think this lantern was permanently retired in the early 1890's and now later than 1898.You can see what it looked in the pictures I've shown of it before I started the restoration.I have a lot more pictures if you want them. It's getting a final polish when it comes back from having the ring base and lid latch soldered back on so when you get it it will be in as close to new condition as you can get any lamp that's this old.I'm selling lantern for $3500 or I will trade for hunting equipment of equal value. It will be shipped in a hard green ammunition box and the globe will be packed in a coffee can and put inside the box so nothing can happen to it.Please call me at 727-479-6513 to discus payment arrangements or any trades or with questions. If you want to see it in person you pick it up at or I can meet you somewhere within reasonable driving distance of my location. « Less
