Unglazed Terracotta Jug with Moulded Decoration - LO.579, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 900 AD to 1200 AD, Dimensions: 7" (17.8cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style:, Islamic, Medium: Earthenware, This jug is made of earthenware. It has been coated with a white slip which is still visible. The body was made of two separate halves and fixed together in the middle. It has a squat globular body and rests on a slightly raised base. The short neck has a slight opening at the top. The handle is attached to the top of the mouth and to the upper half of the body. The lower part of the body consists of vertical spiral lines. The design on the upper part is far more complex: there is a wide decorative register, which consists of bird motifs in relief against a simple ring-matted background. The question arises as to whether the jug was made by moulds or carved. Since the edges of the designs are not very sharp, nor are the reliefs very high, it is beyond doubt that it was made in a separate mould with distinct lower and upper parts. The shape and the decoration of this jug indicate a Khurasan or Central Asian provenance.   « Less

Lustre Painted Baluster Jar - LO.722, Origin: Central Asia,Circa: 1100 AD to 1300 AD, Dimensions: 8.50" (21.6cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Kashan Ware, Medium: Lustreware, Condition: Restored, Preoccupation with surface decoration reached new levels of technical sophistication with the use of metal-based "luster" pigments—a combination of copper and silver—in twelfth- century Iran. The pigment was applied to the cold body of an already glazed tile or vessel, which was refired in a specially constructed kiln that allowed the metallic oxides to adhere to the vessel. The result was a shimmering lustrous surface rivaling those of gold and silver metal objects.   « Less

Seljuk Lustre Painted Jug - LO.741, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 1200 AD, Dimensions: 7.25" (18.4cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Seljuk, Medium: Fritware, In the 9th century, hordes of nomadic Turkic horseman living on the outskirts of the Muslim world began to migrate westward into the heart of Central Asia. By the 10 century, a branch known as the House of Seljuk had broken off from the Oghuz confederation of Turkomen tribesmen, arrived into mainland Persia, and settled in the province of Khurasan. Overtime, the Seljuks converted to Islam and began to adopt the Persian language and culture. In the 11th century, the Seljuks set up an independent state under their leader Tugrul Bey with its capital in Isfahan, initially under the auspices of the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad. The arts thrived during the Seljuk period as the Turkic rulers patronized Persian culture, arts, and literature.   « Less

Unglazed Aquamanile in the Shape of a Composite Creature - LO.746, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 800 AD to 1100 AD, Dimensions: 14.5" (36.8cm) high, Collection: Islamic, Art, Style: Islamic, Medium: Red Earthenware, This fantastic aquamanile features a zoomorphic spout with circular horns, the tail shaped as a balconied tower used to fill the container with water. The body covered with geometric patterns reminiscent of Central Asian connections. Between the spout and the tail and slightly bent transverse handle. The globular body, completely disproportionate rests on a small foot-ring. Zoomorphic vessels can be traced back to the 2nd Millennium BCE and had been continuously produced in Central Asia, especially Iran and Afghanistan. whilst all comparable examples are rather small in size, the piece here illustrated has an imposing allure, further accentuated by the presence of a fantastic caprid as a spout.   « Less
