This is a late Ming dynasty (16th / 17th Century) blue and white bowl. On the outside of the bowl it is painted, all around the bowl, with blue background with three sets of lotus flower and foliage and three white cranes or herons in white color. On the inside of the bowl, a small lotus flower is shown blooming from the top view. There is some abrasion, sand grits on the base and inside of the bowl as shown in the pictures and minute unglazed spots (pic 2). There is also one chip and a hairline crack as shown in picture 3 and 4. The crack can be easily restored as it does not affect the aesthetic of the bowl. Other than that, overall in good condition. This is a finely potted wufu good fortune and longevity bowl from the early Republic period (1912 -1949). It is painted in copper red with gold color. It stands on a high foot rim and inverted upwards to a gold gilded rim. On the inside of the bowl, on the inner rim, there is key fred design. On the base of the inside of the bowl, in the center is the character “shou” – longevity. It is surrounded by 5 wufu (bats) – five blessing, wing-tip to wing-tip linked by lotus. On the outside of the bowl, there are eight bats, lanterns, endless knot and good fortune sign. The number 8 signify prosperity. The eight bats are interlinked with the lotus lozenges and hold the sign for good fortune. The lanterns with a lighted candles in it, is linked to the endless knot and is in turn linked to the lotus leave. Although the bowl bears the Jiaqing (1796 – 1820) reign mark, it is from the early Republic period. There is no hairline crack, glaze fritting, chip, repair or restoration. There is only a minor manufacturing flaw (pic 3) which does not affect the aesthetic of the bowl. It is a very slight mark or depression just at the left pointed bottom end of the tassel – manufacturing fault. The bowl is In very good condition. This is a Qing dynasty pakua design vase, circa. 19th century. The design of the vase is unusual in that it has a “pakua” motif which is not a very common theme on Chinese porcelain. Normally the pakua is an octagon shape amulet in wooden or mirror form. In this case, it is used on a vase. The vase cover has a pair of crane flying amongst the cloud. On the body, the “pakua” or “the eight trigram” is painted all round the body of the jar within eight flaming pearl, floating between the sky above the sea below with two band of rocks in breaking waves. On the shoulder of the jar it is surrounded by a band of ruyi head. The base has a mark. In the centre of the mark, it has a character “zheng” in the design. Probably manufactured from a private kiln. The Pakua is commonly known as `Bagua' or `The Eight Trigram'. It is an octagon shaped amulet divided into eight sections. The Pakua `represents' the entire family e.g. Father, Mother, Elder son, Elder daughter etc.. Perhaps this is why with the `family component' the Pakua is `so powerful! The reflective pakua is placed on gates and above the main door, is said to drive away evil spirits and avert misfortunes. The Eight Trigrams are a series of combinations of three lines. Some of the lines are Yin (broken) lines and Yang (solid) lines. The above eight combinations are all of the possible combinations (in threes) of two different lines. There are many arrangements of the Trigrams. The one featured here is probably one that puts emphasis on the family structure, an all important concept in Pakua teachings. The influences of the family play a major role in the shaping of an individuals behavior. Sometimes, a study of the family illuminates many details of a person's characteristics and behavior, thus shedding lights on his future. In the Pakua School an active involvement of the whole family in the studies is strongly encouraged. The reason three lines are used for the formation of the Trigrams, as opposed to two lines or perhaps even four, relates to another all important concept in Chinese philosophy. This is the concept of SKY MAN EARTH. There is no hairline crack, any repair or restoration. Two firing fault lines at the foot base (picture 6) and minor pin holes. This is a pair of famille rose in pastel colour and floral design tea-cup. The inside of each tea-cup has a slightly flared top and has a barbed shape rim surrounded by an intricately designed inter-connecting miniature iron red colour ruyi head. The outside of the cup is decorated with two peaches and flowers, followed by a lotus plant with a small white crane standing on one of the stem, followed by the peony and prunus flowers, and followed finally by a pheasant standing on a peony flower stem. The base of the tea cup bears the Tongzhi (1862-1874) reign mark in over glaze iron red colour. Can be dated to between late 19th /20th century. The pair of teacups is in good condition. There is no hairline crack, rim or foot fritting. There are also no damage nor restoration. There is however a little sprinkle of minute dark spots in some small areas on the inside, outside and base of the cup (see picture 5). This is a brightly decorated and colorful famille rose medium size bowl. On top of the bowl, the rim is surround by a series of small blue color enamelled ruyi head. At the bottom, it is surrounded by upright blue color lappets in rectangular design. In between the ruyi head and the lappets, is alternating blooming lotus flower and green color lotus seed pod surrounded by meandering and branching foliage. The porcelain of the bowl is light gray in color and not white. The bowl is in good condition. There is only one extremely fine hairline crack of 2cm, from the rim, on the outside and inside of the bowl on the same spot. But it is not noticeable unless upon very close inspection. An unusual, aesthetically painted, beautiful and well designed Qing dynasty blue and white high bowl (or stem bowl). The stand of the bowl is like the bud of a lotus flower. The underside of the inverted rim resembles a lotus flower in full bloom. On the surface of the inverted rim is a pair of Chinese carps, which symbolises marital bliss, and are shown jumping out of the pond. In the center of the bowl is the silhouette of a fish swimming in the lotus pond with rippling water, which also looks like the Chinese character “Shou”, meaning a pair of hands. A fine piece by a master artist, showing his skills in terms of his imagination, and his fluid, bold, rhythmic and smooth flowing brushwork, in the spirit of Ming style. The base of the high bowl bears the honorific reign mark of “Da Ming Nian Zao” in under glaze blue, but it is dated to the Qing Dynasty, from the late 19th century. The high bowl is in good condition, with no hairline cracks, rim or foot fritting, or any signs of damage or restoration. The measurement of the High Bowl is: Diameter is 14.4cm and Height is 5.7cm. A rare green glazed, delicate and beautiful Dog of Fo porcelain incense burner from the Qing dynasty, late 19th century. The Dog of Fo is a Buddhist guardian dog, always seen playing with a brocaded ball. The Dog of Fo is sitting on top of a huge brocaded ball. Standing on the left and right corner of the pedestal are two pairs of baby Dog of Fo, with tiny spikes on their backs, and seen trying to climb up the brocaded ball. The cover of the incense burner is delicately potted. In most instances, such incense burner would come without the cover because the cover is mostly broken. There are minor firing faults, with one seen on the tail of the brown baby Fo. No chips or cracks. One of the green support from the Dog of Fo is broken and re-attached. The tail of the green baby Fo is also broken and re-attached. All these faults are not visible unless upon close inspection. A beautifully decorated famille rose/verte hexagon shaped tazza with 5 different brightly colored gold fish swimming in a hexagon shaped pond surrounded by water lilies, lotus and water plants. The underside of the tazza is decorated with iron red bamboo leave. The base of the tazza bears the four-character minyao reign mark of Tongzhi (1862-1874) and of the Qing Dynasty period. The gold fish tazza is in good condition with no restoration. There are no hairline cracks, rim or glaze fritting or any sign of damage. A beautifully and well shaped Ming Dynasty (1368-1643A.D) rice bowl with blue splashes that looks like the shape of a heart. This piece is retrieved from the sea. The bowl is a common household ware likely to be used for eating rice or drinking water/wine. It is an export ware for the South-East Asian market. It is also likely that this blue bowl can be dated toward the end of the Ming Dynasty - 17th century. The glaze, although is thin and smooth, is still in relatively good conditions. No deteriorating or flaking of the glaze except around the centre of the bowl. The bottom of another bowl is shown attached to the centre of the bowl. Some firing faults, expected degradation, chips & minor losses, abrasions, as a consequence of long period of burial under the sea and subsequent cleaning.
