In central and southern Mesopotamia, stamp seals appeared in the 4th millenium BC. Many stamp seals were carved in the form of an animal or an animal head, and the sealing surface was decorated with simple designs and often representing animals. These seals were used to seal vessels and containers. It is possible that some of these stamps were not actually used as seals, but were worn primarily as amulets.
This seal, carved in the form of a reclining piglet, has a drilled eye, with the underside engraved with 12 drilled holes (significance unknown). Pierced for suspension.
Size: 2 1/16" x 1 15/16", 7/16" thick.
Origin: Sumeria, Late Uruk-Jemdat Nasr, 3300-2900 BC.
Material: Red Stone. « Less
