A very fine and quite rare pair of English Chamberlain's Worcester porcelain spill vases, decorated in the popular "Japan" pattern 240... also know as The Lord Nelson pattern More »
A very fine and quite rare pair of English Chamberlain's Worcester porcelain spill vases, decorated in the popular "Japan" pattern 240... also know as The Lord Nelson pattern or The Green Partridge pattern. Decorated in vivid shades of cobalt blue and iron red and a small green partridge, hidden among the leaves and fans of the design, accented with brilliant gilding. A spill vase was usually kept on the mantelpiece and was filled with rolled paper tapers or very thin wood sticks, called spill. Spill was used to transfer fire from the fireplace to candles, lamps, a pipe or a cigar. Commercial matches, which first surfaced in England during the 1820s were a relatively expensive commodity until the late 19th century, and spill was therefore a more cost effective solution. These attractive vases are in splendid condition. They measure 4.50" X 2.50" $2,250 for the pair, + shipping. « Less

Prussia was Britain's principle ally in the seven years war against France and the mugs celebrate Frederick's early successes of 1757. Britain's war at the time was mostly confined to areas of colonial friction with France such as North America and India and at sea, with Prussia the principle combatant within Continental Europe.
