Kashmir Carpet, 9'6.5" X 12' 10". The history of the Kashmir carpet industry is of Persian origin. However the Persian culture influenced the Kashmiri carpet for quite a long time. With the introduction of the design patterns of shawls, traditional paisley, leaves and flowers the Kashmir carpet attained a high degree of perfection and detail and although in India the origin of hand-knotted carpets can be traced back more than 2000 years, in Kashmir, however, its history begins with the intrusion of Mughals. The Kashmir carpet attained a high degree of perfection and carved out a unique place in the international market. With the carpet weaving in Kashmir in India which arrived with the Mughals. The craft flourished in Kashmir and now Kashmir has become a hub for the quality rugs. The patterns are influenced by the Persian style with Indian version. One typically Kashmiri Indian pattern is the tree of life. It is the color of the carpet that helps distinguish it from others. The colors of Kashmiri carpets are more subtle and muted. The yarn is dye using vegetable colors. The yarn is either silk, wool or a combination of the two. Wool pile is more common. Woolen carpets always have a cotton base but silk carpets may have a cotton or silk base, though silk is used in the woolen carpets for highlights. Just like Persian carpets, the knotting determines the durability. Other quality aspects include color and design. The kashmiri carpets can be double knotted and single knotted. The single knotted pile is fluffier than the double knotted. The pile of the double knotted carpet is less resistant to touch and pressure, this particular carpet is of good color and condition. « Less

Red and Black Iranian (Tabriz) Carpet, 8'6" x 4'11". From the mid-19th century there has been a revival of commercial carpet production in Iran, and Tabriz has been one of the most important centres in the country, producing carpets of widely varying quality, largely destined for Europe. These new carpets are Ghiordes-knotted and have a simpler weft arrangement. The highly varied designs include medallion schemes in curvilinear draftsmanship as well as imitations of classic carpet patterns from other parts of Persia. The designs have been criticized as too regular and mechanical, and the colouring as too hard, the old vegetable dyes having been largely supplanted by European chromes and anilines. The wool is said to be harsher than that used in other Iranian centres, resulting in a stiffer, crisper pile. Instead of using the fingers to tie the knots, it is a local custom among the weavers to use a knife with a projection like a buttonhook. By this means they can develop higher speed than the weavers in other districts and have been timed at faster than one knot per second. « Less

Persian Carpet. Red ground with ivory medallion. Ivory and beige borders. 9'8.5" (fringe of 1.5 inches on top and bottom) x 6' 9.5", . This is an example of a Medallion Carpet, or any floor covering on which the decoration is dominated by a single geometric centrepiece, such as a star-shaped, circular, quatrefoiled, or octagonal figure. The name, however, is sometimes also given to a carpet on which the decoration consists of several forms of this kind or even of rows of medallion figures. Among Persian carpets, particularly those of the classic period, the medallion may represent an open lotus blossom with 16 petals as seen from above, a complex star form, or a quatrefoil with pointed lobes. Toward each end of the carpet there may be added to this centrepiece a cartouche form (an oval or oblong ornate frame), placed transversely, and a finial or pendant that sometimes is very large. In each corner of the field there may appear a quarter-medallion, which may or may not have the same contour and the same appendages as the central medallion. Such combinations are still used in the decoration of modern Persian carpets. There is some wear and lightness of color on one side of carpet. « Less

A Tabriz Carpet, 7' x 10'. The central cartouche in navy, green and cream on a light red ground. floor covering handmade in or around Tabriz, the principal city of More »
A Tabriz Carpet, 7' x 10'. The central cartouche in navy, green and cream on a light red ground. floor covering handmade in or around Tabriz, the principal city of northwestern Iran and one of its best-known carpet-producing centres. The identification of the court carpets of the early 16th-century Safavid shahs who made Tabriz their capital is no longer as simple as it once seemed. Still, the magnificent Ardabil Carpet at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and its mate in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art seem likely representatives of this production. More characteristic of Tabriz carpets, however, are the many 16th- and 17th-century carpets of commercial quality, in Senna (Sehna) knotting upon a foundation of cotton, which apparently were exported to southern Europe and are now widespread in museum collections. These carpets usually show a medallion decorative scheme, ranging from a single medallion to the complexity of a star centrepiece with pendants and cartouches, reflected by quarter-medallions similarly elaborated in the corners of the field. The ground pattern often features coiled arabesque vine work. From the mid-19th century there has been a revival of commercial carpet production in Iran, and Tabriz has been one of the most important centres in the country, producing carpets of widely varying quality, largely destined for Europe. These new carpets are Ghiordes-knotted and have a simpler weft arrangement.
