Seljuk Bronze Lidded Ewer - FF.121, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 1200 AD to 1300 AD, Dimensions:14" (35.6cm) high x 7.75" (19.7cm) wide, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Seljuk Medium: Bronze, In the 9th century, hordes of nomadic Turkic horseman living on the outskirts of the Muslim world began to migrate westward into the heart of Central Asia. By the 10 century, a branch known as the House of Seljuk had broken off from the Oghuz confederation of Turkomen tribesmen, arrived into mainland Persia, and settled in the province of Khurasan. Overtime, the Seljuks converted to Islam and began to adopt the Persian language and culture. In the 11th century, the Seljuks set up an independent state under their leader Tugrul Bey with its capital in Isfahan, initially under the auspices of the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad. The arts thrived during the Seljuk period as the Turkic rulers patronized Persian culture, arts, and literature.   « Less

Magnificently carved Dieppe ivory napkin ring! A profusion of fruits and flowers and intricately detailed leaves in absolutely pristine condition cover the entire surface of the ring. This cornucopia is banded at the edges and bears a central cartouche in shield shape. The shield is monogrammed A D (even I can make out this monogram!) The shield is nicely textured as a backdrop for the monogram. Dieppe, a port city in France, was the entry point for many ivories, spices and exotic items from the Orient and Africa from the 1500-1800's. As such, it became a center for fine and creative ivory sculpting; many of the finest pieces are on display in the Dieppe Museum. It only gets harder to find good quality Dieppe ivory sculpted items in excellent condition, as is this napkin holder.   « Less

Wonderful early Victorian ecritoire. Museum quality painting of Seven Storey Palace bediapure. Lots of mother of pearl inlay and gilt detailing. The mother of pearl integration with the painting lends dimension to an already exceptional work of art. The reflected light off the mother of pearl on the buildings make it clear that it is sunset, and the sun is glowing on these buildings....people are coming in from the fields to eat and rest. The East Indian influence is also strongly felt in the massive amount of mother of pearl inlay surrounding the center painting, and elaborate decoration. It comes with key, original compartment coverings, two with mother of pearl top knops, and ink bottles with brass tops. The writer's slope is covered with red velvet lined with red embroidered silk. Superb! The dimensions: 21" long (yes! that's 21" across! HUGE), 14" wide (from back to front), 6 1/4" tall (or deep), the writer slope fully extends to 19-20". Condition: overall very good. Imperfections: One of the feet has been restored, another has a chip. The key no longer turns the lock. There is a chip on the lacquer of one of the compartment covers. One of the hinges is loose, as frequently occurs with these very old papier mache ecritoires. This is a superb ecritoire, the painting alone a masterpiece!   « Less
