This carving is on the unusual side. Rather than a square or rectangular panel, this piece is more crest like. It is comprised of a bough of holly on one side, pine on the other, with pine cones! A delightful piece, ready to hang, and very nice quality carving. I would say the styling is French Empire. The staining on the wood is quite black; although in the pictures it does not appear so. Pretty three light candelabra from Sitzendorf, late 1800's. Standing 16" tall, the circular base is decorated with applied flowers, gilding and earthen hues. A putto stands at an anvil, forging a heart with a heavy mallet. A twining leafy vine grows up the central branch of the candelabra, bursting with multiple applied flowers. The two side arms of the candelabra are similarly decorated with the floral leafy vine. The colors are subtle and delicate. A lovely piece! The strongest color is the red of the heart. Condition: very good. There is one small chip on the putto's apron, which is pictured below. Dimensions: 16" tall, 10" wide and the base is 4" diameter. Marks: Sitzendorf mark, russet numeral 31 in overglaze and incised numeral 383.   « Less

The elegant floral decorative motifs engraved into the sides of the ring highlight the ancient button without distracting attention away from it. At first, the idea of buttons in Roman fashion appears odd, considering Ancient Roman citizens are traditionally portrayed wearing togas. However, a button such as this once would have likely secured an ancient leather garment, perhaps of a type worn by soldiers under their armor. Clearly, this item would have been quite a luxurious piece of clothing to deserve buttons of bronze. The charming, almost comical that decorate the button reveal that even a costume formality such as buttons were treated with the same attention to detail and love of decoration as the textiles themselves. The wide face, with alert eyes and groomed hair, appears to look more like a mask than a representation of a person’s face. Forged from bronze, this button was in itself quite valuable and would have doubtlessly held in place the garments of a wealthy individual. This beautiful ring emulates the enduring taste and style of the Classics and surely would have been just as admired in antiquity as it is today. - (FJ.7134)   « Less
