Jonas dos Santos Early Man watercolor on paper. Signed and dated 1979. Jonas dos Santos is a performance artist, muralist, painter and sculptor whose work reflects his interest in social and cultural issues. He was born in Recife, Brazil, in 1947. He attended the Atelier de Artes Livres, Recife, and received his BA degree from the Escola de Arte, Recife, in 1968. From 1968 to 1972 he studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. Abe Rothstein was a well known north shore Jewish Boston artist that was in a group of artists that included Alcalay of the Harvard Art School. This is from his 1950's abstract period when he combined an abstract and cubist form. There is not much available from him in that period and he was much more prolific later with traditional oils and landscapes. This looks to be mostly inks and is very well done on board and matted. The opening size for the art is 9.5" x 14.5. with the matte it is about 17.5" x 22.5". A masterpiece for him and not his later common work. Bought from his estate by the great deceased folk artist Stephen Huneck. I purchased from Stephen with a group of Alcalay and Rothstein work about 10 + years ago and have held since then.   « Less

Lebadang limited edition print 24.25 x 30 inches framed, image 19.5 x 25.5 inches, 77/120. Signed lower right. Lebadang was born in Quang Tri, Vietnam in 1922. He moved to France in 1939 to pursue an art career at Ecole de Beaus Arts de Toulouse. While studying there he was awarded prizes for painting, drawing, and sculpture and won his first commission and emigrated to France in 1939 to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse. He had his first one-man show in Paris in 1950 and over the next thirty years gained prominence throughout France and Germany. He came to the attention of Americans in 1966 when the Cincinnati Art Museum hosted the first one-man exhibition of his paintings in the United States. In his work Lebadang fuses the cultural interests of the Orient and Europe, creating graceful imagery in infinite variations of line, shape, and color. Lebadang is recognized as an accomplished printmaker, having worked extensively in the media of etching, lithography, and serigraphy. "Lebadangraphy" is his invention whereby he achieves harmony with a minimum of colors, using the same silkscreens several times. Constantly experimenting with her style, she has been painting since the age of 17 when she attended art school in Santiago. Woodcut print by Shiko Munakata Japanese c1962 abstract children with butterflies, birds and flowers. The frame measures 16 x 21.75 inches. The image itself measures 9 x 14 inches. In all original condition. Signed lower left and chop mark lower right. Munakata was born in 1903 and died in 1975. There was a wonderful exhibition of Munakatas woodcut screens Jan 9, 1968 through February 18, 1968 at the Brooklyn Museum in NY. Munakata was a practicing Buddhist born in 1903, the son of a blacksmith in Aomori Prefecture, located in the North of Japan's main island. He first began to paint in oil as a self-taught artist. Later in 1924 he went to Tokyo to study art with the hopes of becoming a Western-style painter.Inspired by the works of Vincent van Gogh, In 1926 he saw and was impressed by a book of woodblock-printed poems and pictures by the artist Sumio Kawakami (1895–1972) and in 1928 he visited the printmaker Un’ichi Hiratsuka (b 1895) and received instruction in the woodblock printing technique. In the same year he was selected for the first time to submit an oil painting to the 9th Teiten (Imperial Art Exhibition). In 1936 Muneyoshi Yanagi, a theologian and philosopher who founded the Mingei (folk arts) movement, and the ceramicists Shoji Hamada and Kanjiro Kawai acknowledged his prints and from that time they encouraged him. In turn he was spiritually and ideologically influenced by the spokesman of Japanese Romanticism, Yojuro Yasuda (1910–81), who praised Japanese art and aesthetics rather than the contemporary Western mentality that was popular at the time. At this time, he also seriously considered the importance of traditional folk customs Many of his prints and paintings show religious subjects. Other subjects are taken from Japanese legends or from nature.After World War II had ended, the artist became famous outside Japan. His works were shown at the Lugano Print Exhibition in 1952, the Sao Paulo Biennal in 1955, the Venice Biennal in 1956. In each of these exhibitions he was awarded with first prizes. After these successful exhibition, Munakata went to the U.S., where he lectured at different universities and had numerous solo exhibitions Shipping extra.
