42459 Antique Oushak, Turkey, circa 1900At first glance, this striking antique Oushak appears to have an allover design. A closer look reveals the delicate linear outline of a star medallion derived from the classical Turkish Ushak carpets of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Stylized floral sprays fill the areas above and below the medallion, continuing its design texture across the sandy field. A stylized arabesque vinescroll is set boldly against a persimmon ground, providing a monumental contrast to the delicacy and linearity of the field. Antique Tabriz from Northwest Persia, late nineteenth centuryNineteenth century antique Persian rugs generally derive from the designs of classical Persian carpets from several centuries earlier, but rarely do they capture the precise detail and coloration of such classical forerunners, as this lovely antique Tabriz does. The field consists of a monumental pattern of interlacing strapwork arabesques in shades of green, apricot, and red against a deep tan ground with sprays of smaller flowers as minor detail. The border adapts the strapwork arabesques to a longitudinal format and sets them against a warm apricot ground that beautifully complements the coloration of the field. A sea of crimson shells surround black isles of ashen sand. The blood of ancient civilizations boils from the core of this rug, displayed in a proud wash of deep reds and oranges. The perimeter of the rug is flecked with diagonally upward ferns, parched by the desert sun and panted with pastel colors to contrast the both vibrant and ashen central partition of this ancient Bidjar. The heavy use of vibrant dyes in this rug is a call back to ancient Persian civilization. Style: Bidjar / Bijar Origin: Persia Size: 8. ft 09 in x 12 ft (2.67 m x 3.66 m)   « Less

Similar to the rug designs of the Kievan Rus, this Kerman uses a wide variety of colors and dyes in its immaculate design. Pools of serene water are subdued by geometric shapes that give way to washed pastel colors and tangled forest undergrowth. An untamed jungle of vines sits atop a ruby red background, barely overcoming the vibrant wash that overpowers the smallest tangles. A masterwork of the finest Persian craftsmen. Antique Tabriz, Persia, circa 1900. An exceptionally fine Herati pattern unfolds with meticulous precision across the field of this incomparable antique Tabriz. The palette is exceedingly soft, so that only the details in aubergine stand out amidst the complex minutia of the design. The main border is especially unusual, consisting as it does of eight-pointed cartouches filled with inscriptions. The consistent palette applied in field and border alike endow the composition with a wonderful visual unity despite the variations in design detail, making this a first-rate decorative piece as well as a genuine work of art. 43561 Antique Bidjar, Persia, late nineteenth century - Antique Bidjars like this are famed for the precision of their design and the tightness of their weave, but rarely do they also achieve such rich saturated color as well. Here a lavish classic Persian ‘mina khani’ or allover vinescroll trellis in various shades of terracotta, green, and ivory unfolds across the blue-back field. The pattern, like the weave, is densely worked, that the dark ground is little more than an outline underscoring the rich color of the various vines and flowers. The palmette vinescroll border is somewhat more open, but set against terracotta in rich contrast to the field. The lustrous quality of the wool accentuates the vibrant effects of the palette.
