41302 Antique Tabriz, Persia, circa 1900 - The spectacular antique Tabriz is inspired by classical Persian garden carpets of the eighteenth century. The field is divided by intersecting borders into four quadrants, each divided yet again by finer borders into six squares with their own miniatures compositions of shrubs inhabited by animals. Shifting ground colors help to set the various squares apart from one another. A broad arabesque vinescroll main border encloses the entire field, with flanking minor borders to help frame the overall composition. With is various scenes of paradise, this piece is like having many different smaller rugs in one. Style: Tabriz Origin: Iran Size: 9. ft 05 in x 13 ft 01 in (2.87 m x 3.99 m)   « Less

Antique Hereke, Turkey, circa 1900 - Hereke carpets from western Turkey are famed for their luxurious, finely worked adaptations of classical Persian designs, often in silk like this stunning example. Here we see a decorative image of paradise rendered as a centralized pattern of whispy vines. The use of palmettes is sparing, allowing space for the lovely menagerie of animals and birds. Drooping palm trees in all four corners suggest that this is as much a landscape as an ornamental design. The rich red border provides a nice framing contrast for the cool softness prevailing in the field. Style: Hereke Origin: Turkey Size: 9. ft x 13 ft 02 in (2.74 m x 4.01 m)   « Less

Antique Bakhtiari, Persia, late nineteenth century. Although antique Bakhtiari carpets represent a village or tribal rug weaving tradition, some, like this splendid example, draw upon the sophisticated repertoire of urban Persian carpet design. In the field a series of elaborate flowering palmettes in shades of red, green, and blue repeat across a soft ivory ground, while a trellis of stylized branches and curling leaves unifies the various palmettes as a staggered allover design. A zig-zag vinescroll rosette border on soft blue surrounds the field, flanked by minor vinescroll borders as an added framing effect. Here the angular abstract geometry of village weaving nicely balances the suave complexity of the urban floral ornamental elements. Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late 19th centuryWhile descended from the refined palemtte tendril designs of classical Persian carpets, this antique Sultanabad has the bold graphic drawing and exuberant freedom of a village rug, like the best Bakshaishes and Serapis. A grand array of palmettes in soft reds, blues, and pale apricot spreads rhythmically across the soft cream ground, linked by arced red vines and thin stems. A dense red ground border of cartouche medallions provides a contrast of color and design against the light openness of the field. Antique Swedish Carpet, dated 1927 This lovely Swedish carpet is a magnificent homage to the traditional Swedish Rollakan or flatwoven tapestry, although here it is rendered in thick pile. The field has an allover design of fleurons and palmettes in cinnamon, ivory and saffron on tan, with a row of stylized horsemen at the top and bottom edges. A bold cinnamon ground border encloses the whole composition with monumental flair, making the piece a worthy, highly decorative successor to its traditional inspiration. Antique Mehajeran Sarouk, late nineteenth centuryMehajeran Sarouks like this are prized for their more graphic and monumental design sense as well as the richness of their color. On this lush example a profusion of leafy, flowering vines in golden and terracotta tones writhes sinuously across a deep blue ground that accentuates and underscores the effect of the design. The terracotta ground border provides an exquisite contrast in its scale, color, and the crisper, more angular style of its drawing. Sarouks of this kind are more assertive than later examples, and much harder to come by. Style: Sarouk Origin: Persia Size: 10 ft 03 in x 13 ft 04 in (3.12 m x 4.06 m)   « Less
