Antique Kashan, Persia, early twentieth centuryA gracefiul allover pattern of flowering vines spreads itself across a deep burgundy ground on this supremely elegant antique Kashan. The border reverses the color effects of the field with its palmette vinescroll set against a navy ground. This example is distinctive in its use of animal inhabitants derived from classical Persian court carpets. Galloping deer cavort along the lower edge of the field while exotic birds perch among the vines. The lustrous wool an thick pile underscore the aura of heavenly luxury.

A sandy desert of golden vines are traced by thing lines of indigo color. Using only two primary colors in the scheme, this rug focuses on the patterns as opposed to varied color selection. Deep blues are shadowed by the entangling roots of ancient trees, sitting atop a border mote that guards a plain of gold. The outermost layer encompasses the entire piece in runic and ancient design that reminds one of the Pagan age Romans and their ornate, masonic etchings. Truly a masterpiece, and without a doubt one of the finest Kermans in our expansive collection.

Antique Amritsar, India, circa 1900. The splendor of the Mogul Dynasty is alive and well on this sumptuous antique Indian Amritsar. Like the great Mogul court classical Persian inspiration, although combined with more exotic, native Indian plant motifs as well. The palmette and cloudband border reverses the gold and ivory palette of the field for framing contrast, yet preserving its scale for a unified decorative effect. What is not classical Indian or Persian is the palette, with its soft, luminous, decorative coloration in place of the more vibrant, pungent color typical of Mogul carpets.

43080 Antique Kerman, Persia, circa 1900 - Antique Kermans are the proud heirs of a long tradition reaching back to the great Persian carpet masterpieces of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but rarely do they capture so effectively the design and stately presence of such forerunners. This exquisite example is descended from the classical Kerman ‘vase carpets,’ with its allover design of lush vines and palmettes emerging from stylized amphorae. A richly detailed vinescroll border frames the field, using a smaller scale as a visual counterpoint. Unlike the vibrant classical forerunners, the palette here is subdued and elegantly decorative.

Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryThis exceptional antique Sultanabad has a ‘Herati’ pattern spreading across the soft sage field, although its greater scale and spontaneous drawing gives the familiar design a distinctive new quality. The border is comprised of star cartouches linked by vines. Its cinnamon ground echoes the color of various palmettes within the field, just as the outer stripe of sage picks up its ground color. The particular synergy between the sage and cinnamon is particularly effective. The velvety wool nicely complements the beauty of the palette.

Antique Oushak, Turkey, circa 1900Antique Oushaks are eagerly sought after for their subtle, tone-on-tone compositions, but rarely do they have the restraint of this marvelous carpet. Here the design consists solely of a crenellated medallion hovering amidst a slightly darker creamy tan field. Only a narrow vinescroll border frames the field, with a pale tan outer zone as an added accent. The silken lustrous wool pile provides the final touch in this creamy symphony.

Antique Khorassan Persian Carpet, late nineteenth century A rich and unusual allover design of flowering vases repeats rhythmically across the deep blue ground of this lush More »
Antique Khorassan Persian Carpet, late nineteenth century A rich and unusual allover design of flowering vases repeats rhythmically across the deep blue ground of this lush antique Khorassan. The interest of the design is heightened by the lovely coloration with deep persimmon, wedgewood blue, pale green, tans, and aubergine. The last color, used sparingly, recurs as the ground of the cartouche main border, whose vertical repetitions nicely echo the arrangement of the vases in the field. The ivory minor borders impart an accenting structure to the overall composition.

Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA striking design of vines and leafy palmettes in ivory, soft blue, and sage green unfolds boldly across the rich terracotta field of this exceptionally lovely antique Sultanabad. Smaller palmettes and tiny star-like rosettes make up the border, set against a sweet sky blue ground that frames the field in a lovely complementary effect, while ivory minor borders make the transition to the field. The rich lustrous wool of the pile further enhances the beauty of the design and coloration.
