Antique Oushak / Ushak Turkish Rug, late nineteenth century This carpet has the kind of lovely golden palette with soft apricot and cognac tones that gives antique Oushaks their reputation as first-rate decorative rugs. Red is used subtly but effectively, as an added accent, especially in the border. While Oushaks often have a bold, angular, large-scale drawing, this one is unusually delicate, detailed, and curvilinear. The central field pattern is almost round, in place of the customary elongated or hexagonal shape. All these curves and lacy details give this carpet an incomparable classic grace and elegance that make it stand out among the finest Oushaks.

Antique Sarouk, Persia, 1910s - This unique medallion-and-corner carpet produced in the Sarouk region of western Iran features the elegant burnt sienna, camel, Persian blue, and dark sienna color scheme typically used by the great carpet weavers of northwestern Persia and Iranian-Azerbaijan. The unique eight-sided medallion consisting of tessellating mihrabs is surrounded by two vase-shaped pendants that radiate flowery arabesques across the carpet field. In addition to decorative corner pieces, the carpet field contains a secondary inner border comprised of interlocking turret motifs.

Antique Agra, India, late 19th century Pointed oval medallions in a tight, staggered array comprise an allover network design on this lush but restrained antique Agra. Each medallion is elaborately articulated with interior detail, as are the reciprocal concave trapezoidal spaces defined by the medallions. A monumental border made up of geometricized palmettes and angular vines frames the field. But all this lavish complexity is effectively restrained or mollified by the soft, tone-on-tone coloration, which causes much of the detail to recede from view, making this a highly decorative carpet.

Antique Malayer Carpet from Persia, circa 1900This elegant antique Malayer is remarkable in its use of the same basic pattern to comprise all the elements of the field. The medallion, cornerpieces and the ground are all built up on the Herati design; only the orientation and coloration of the elements vary, but this is sufficient to make the different areas appear to contrast. Conversely, the borders do utilize different motifs, but their color and graphic detail make them relate closely to the medallion and cornerpieces. Through this subtle manipulation of form and tonality, the carpet achieves a unified but varied and dynamic effect.
