At the center of the field a grand red medallion with arabesque detail sprouts complex finials, balanced by ivory cornerpieces with similarly elaborate internal detail. Vinescrolls writhe gracefully across the intervening soft blue ground. Spiraling vine and palmettes comprise the main border, but set now against a dramatic blue-black ground the frames the field with suitable contrast, reinforced by red ground minor borders. The color harmony is especially lovely, with tones that are at once rich yet soft. The exceptional quality of the drawing and color is matched by opulent texture of the velvety wool pile. Antique American Hooked Rug, circa 1900 - Antique American hooked rugs sometimes tread the boundary between ornamental pattern and pictorial imagery, like this charming piece. Perhaps it could be entitled, "Autumn Leaves," given the lovely depiction of fall foliage that it discloses in shades of red, brown, gold, and sage green. But the leaves all sway and blow in undulating rhythms affirming the strong decorative power of the design, an aspect underscored by the remarkable border of leaves and interlocking horseshoes Style: Hooked Origin: America Size: 4. ft 04 in x 7. ft 04 in (1.32 m x 2.24 m)   « Less

Modernist / Bauhaus Tapestry Carpet by Wassily Kandinsky, France, dated 1939 Metaphorically speaking, Modernist carpets are textile paintings. This one, however, truly is. Taken from Wassily Kandinsky's watercolor "Horizontales," it is a masterpiece of Abstract Expressionism. Various cryptic symbols float across a landscape of irregular horizontal bands in a dynamic interplay of form and vibrant color. We can make out the shapes of animals - a dog and snake, and perhaps a ladder. But the effect here is deliberate ambiguity in a striped background suggesting infinite space. The more we try to interpret and measure, the more this modernist art and its meaning eludes us, much like the abstraction of traditional Oriental rugs as well. Style: Art Deco Origin: France Size: 5. ft 04 in x 7. ft 04 in (1.63 m x 2.24 m)   « Less

Antique Bakshaish (Bakhshaish or Bakhshaysh) Wagireh from Persia, late nineteenth century Although this charming little rug is a Wagireh - a pastiche of pattern elements to be used as a weaver's guide for making a larger carpet - the design still works beautifully on its own because of the animated drawing and the spectacular quality of the color. The design is remarkably fluid and classical for a Bakshaish, and the interplay of red, mid blue, ivory and gold is simply incomparable. As a small decorative rug, it is a veritable gem.
