Antique Finnish Rya, dated 1925 This charming antique Finnish Rya has a classic Scandinavian folk art design of the eighteenth century rendered with absolute fidelity. Sprays of carnations, tulips, and poppies hover on a striking black ground, surrounding a series of inscriptions. The date of 1925 indicates when the rug was woven; the date of 1798 is probably the date of its archetype, no doubt a family heirloom. This piece was probably copied to serve as a wedding rug, a function Ryas often fulfill. The initials H and K are probably the names of the bride and groom. This rug is a rare testament to the living tradition of carpet weaving in European folk culture right into the modern period. Antique Kashan, Persia, late nineteenth century - This exquisitely elegant antique Kashan has a classical Persian medallion design that is almost jewel-like in its coloration and drawing. A golden medallion outlined in ruby-red occupies the center, surrounded my a mesh of fine tendrils, with grand finials and cornerpieces in red just beyond. The lovely variegated blue green ground of the field provides the perfect foil for the red and gold. Antique Bezalel Rug from Israel, early twentieth century Initially this lovely antique Bezalel impresses the viewer as a design of oriental derivation, and to some extent its details are indeed Persian. But much of the feeling is European, Art Nouveau, or even neo-medieval Arts and Crafts, recalling the designs and the coloration of William Morris wallpapers, with their swaying floral forms pulsating with life and energy. This piece testifies to the eclectic origins of the Bezalel weavers and designers, reflecting their European as well as Oriental heritage. Vintage Oriental Chinese Art Deco Rug, 1920's, one of a pair A scalloped border of dark brown encloses a golden sand field on this exquisitely subtle and restrained antique Chinese Art Deco. At first the field appears empty or open, but it is actually covered by a tone-on-tone design of scrolls and cloudbands emanating inward from the outer edges. In their sinuous rhythms they echo the scalloped forms of the border and continue its visual effects across the carpet in a more subdued manner. This carpet testifies to the masterful design sensibilities of Chinese weavers as they made the transition into the modern world.
