Victorian, circa 1860 Pair Staffordshire cricketer figures, one modeled as a batsman, and the other as a bowler. The pair are matched, but go together very well. The crazing differs slightly. Both wearing floral shirts and orange caps, with the stumps on one side and their jackets draped on the other side. Old dull mercurial gilt line to bases, with decoration to shirts and jackets. Good creamy glaze. Vent hole to reverses. Similar pair illustrated figure 3302/3303, page 289, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. The batsman is thought to represent Julius Caesar, who played for Surrey for many years and also in the All England Eleven from 1849, with which he went to America and Australia. Batsman: Good. No hairlines. Minor paint losses to shirt. Gilt slightly rubbed. Kiln effects: over glazed manufacture chip to reverse of foot rim. Shrinkage crack to his right knee and below his belt on the right side of the figure. Repair to his neck. Bowler: Good. Minor flaking to middle finger of left hand, left sleeve, and front of base. Gilt slightly rubbed. Kiln effects: shrinkage crack between feet. Shrinkage line to both sides of neck and left shoulder, and between the stumps. Pre-Victorian, circa 1820 Pair Staffordshire Pearlware bocage figures, one depicting the flight of the holy family into Egypt, the other depicting their return to Israel. ''Flight'' is modeled as Mary sat on a donkey, holding the baby Jesus in her arms, and accompanied by Joseph. ''Return'' is modeled as Mary sat on a donkey, holding a slightly older Jesus, and accompanied by Joseph who has a walking stick. Flowering bocage trees behind. Oval scroll bases. Shredded clay to the ground. Decorated all round. Two vent holes to underside. Similar piece illustrated figure page 256, ''English Earthenware Figures 1740-1840'' by Pat Halfpenny. Good. Flight: Minor paint losses to reverse of tree. Kiln effects: shrinkage line to Joseph''s neck; touch mark to the donkey''s tail; stray green enamel to Joseph''s nose. Victorian, circa 1850 Staffordshire figure with a Theatrical and Literary theme which features a boy beside a pillar, putting a crown on his head, stood on a rectangular base. The piece is titled, ''HENRY. V. TRYING ON THE CROWN.'' to the front of the base. Multi-coloured with underglaze blue version. Dull gilt titles and embellishment. Flatback, decorated mainly to the front. Vent hole to the underside. This piece represents a scene from the Shakespeare play, ''The Second Part of King Henry IV''. Book reference,''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding, page 296, figure 1078. Generally good. Crazing differs between the two figures and the girl figure is slightly taller than the boy) Staffordshire figures of a young boy and girl, probably Royal children, each lying on the back of a russet and white spaniel. The spaniel is standing on an oval, naturalistic base with three legs molded free. Dull gilt decoration and base line. Vent hole to reverse of both figures and another to underside of the boy figure. Painted mark to underside of both. Similar piece illustrated figure 2244, page 146, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. Victorian, circa 1860 Staffordshire ''Death of the lion Queen'' figure modeled as Ellen Bright the lion trainer. Niece of George Wombwell, the menagerist, in 1850 whilst performing in Chatham with a lion and tiger (decorated as leopard) the latter seized her by the throat and killed her before she could be rescued. The affair led to the prohibition of such performances by women but the leading menageries continued to have ''lion kings''. Molded on a gilt titled base with a leopard standing on its hind legs to her left and a recumbent lion to her right. Vent hole to underside. Good. No cracks. No hairlines. Rubbing to gilt. Kiln effect: craze lines to her left arm and chest. Repair to hat feathers. Restored chip to leopard''s left ear and hip. Pre-Victorian, circa 1830 Early pair Staffordshire Sherratt-type table base figures of Elijah and the Widow. Both figures modeled sitting on a naturalistic base in front of a bocage tree. Elijah is feeding bread to two ravens. One raven perched on his right shoulder, another perched by his side on a rocky outcrop, above a stream. The widow has a barrel by her side with a pitcher in front, and is holding twigs in her hands. A young boy stands on her left side, also holding twigs. Decorated all round. Title ''ELIJAH &'' ''WIDOW'' on an oval plaque to base front. Good. Elijah: Slight rubbing to base corners. Kiln effect: a few glaze pops to front of bocage and reverse of outcrop. Repair to a few bocage leaves - overall, 80 percent good and original. Repairs and overpainting to ravens. Two front table feet repaired. Repair inside the table base at front and side. Widow: Some rubbing to reverse of tree trunk. Kiln effects: shrinkage crack to top of her head and a few inside the base; shrinkage line to boy''s right ankle.
