Turkish Art Deco, twentieth century This strking Art Deco carpet from Turkey is remarkably modern in its abrstact, expressive geometry. Large irregular patches of color repeat across the surface in a grid-like effect, which nonetheless remains dynamic and freely assymetrical. The justaposition of yellows, greems, and apricot, with sparing us of iviory and black evokes twentieth-century abstract experessionism at its best.

Antique English Needlepoint, late nineteenth century - This stunning antique carpet stands in a long tradition of English needlepoint going back to Elizabethan times. A highly unusual Medieval pattern of scalloped quatrefoils linked by broad strapwork bands occupies the field. Small floral designs fill the spaces within the larger pattern. A thin border provides a nice contrast to the monumental design of the field. The colors are soft, adding to the decorative effect of the design, but the dark ground provides dramatic contrast, accenting the decorative details.

Antique Khotan Oriental Carpet, early twentieth century - Although the weave identifies this elegant carpet as an antique Khotan from East Turkestan, its silky soft coloration, wiry, animated drawing, and its design of tendril palmettes recall the features most prized in Oushak carpets made at the same period in Turkey. The striking border of angular vinescrolls is also reminiscent of Oushaks, as is the subtle contrast of salmon and cool tans. But the use of smaller multiple borders rather than one large one is in the classic Khotan tradition.
