Antique Uzbek Emboidered Rug, Central Asia, early twentieth centuryA traditional allover design of circular cruciform medallions in parallel rows unfolds with an animated rustic charm across the champagne ground of this antique Uzbek emboidered rug. Small hooked elements fill the areas between the medallions. A main border of fleur-de-lis enclosed by minor reciprocal borders frames the entire composition, nicely echoing the graphic effect and design of the field. Vintage Netherlands Art Deco, 1930's Vintage English Art Deco, 1930's (Designed by The Architect Hildo Krop)- This beautiful study in modernist abstraction may conceal a wealth of traditional oriental secrets. Could it be that there are finely rendered Chinese frets or meanders and curling arabesques sprawling asymmetrically across the surface? Dare we see a large irregular ivory medallion here with corner pieces in the lower area? Is this a stunning modern deconstruction on the ancient vocabulary of rug design, or are we looking at Gorky or Miro translated into decorative floor-covering? Hildo Krop was a famous sculpt, potter, designer of furniture, etc, and was forerunner of the style "Amsterdamse School" in the 1920s-1930s. If you rotate the picture 90 degrees right, you will notice two figures on the left hand side of the carpet with blond hair, arms raised (typical for Hildo Krop sculptures and graphics). 43799 Antique Needlepoint, England, nineteenth century - The allover reciprocal design of this extraordinary antique English needlepoint carpet was inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement that reigned supreme in later nineteenth century Britain. The immediate inspiration was undoubtedly ceramic tile designs, which, like this carpet, set cross-like quatrefoils end to end in reciprocal arrangement with stepped octagons. The internal floral detail within these forms adds a note of elegant finesse and delicacy, like the rich yet reserved coloration of the design. The trompe l’oeuil border depicts a helical band or ribbon that wraps around an internal curling tendril pattern.
