Antique Persian Kerman Rug, late nineteenth centuryThis exquisite antique Kerman is inspired by the fabric and wallpapers designed by William Morris. It depicts an Oriental garden or paradise theme with the tree of life, but in place of the symmetrical presentation and animal or human inhabitants customary in Persian designs of this type, this one is asymmetrical and almost entirely floral, which, like much of its detail, recalls Neo-medieval design and gold-on-black coloration of Morris's work. Rendered with impeccable skill and decorative sensibility, this carpet is truly one of a kind. Style: Kerman Origin: Persia Size: 8. ft 08 in x 10 ft 04 in (2.64 m x 3.15 m)   « Less

Antique Tabriz, Northwest Persia, late nineteenth century A staggered array of flowering v-shaped vines and palmettes in shades of gold, tan, and soft green, repeats rhythmically across the deep navy ground of this sumptuous antique Tabriz. Amidst this floral exuberance pairs of birds flank the base of the v-forms, adding an animated pictorial quality to the ornamental framework of the entire design. A vinescroll border with palmettes like those of the field is set against a cinnamon ground, surrounded to either side by sage green minor borders, which collectively frame the field design with a lovely color contrast. 43468 Ghiordes, Turkey, late nineteenth century - This impressive antique Ghiordes draws upon hundreds of years of tradition, harking back as it does to the great classic Turkish prayer rugs of the Ottoman period in the seventeenth an eighteenth centuries. Here the field has in fact doubled the stepped niche design in adapting it to a room-sized format. The series of indented niches that surrounds the field recall classic Turkush Ladik rugs, just as the borders draw upon classic Mudjur design. But despite the eclectic background, the overall effect is remarkably unified, no doubt because of the consistent use of the same soft palette of pale blues and tans across the carpet. Antique Oriental Agra carpet, early 20th century - One hardly senses the compact richness of the Herati pattern on this antique lovely Agra since much if it is rendered in soft tones that recede into the ground color. Only the details in deep burgundy stand out like the smile of Lewis Carroll's Cheshire Cat, suggesting a simpler more open pattern. The border repeats this "now you see it, now you don't" approach, giving the carpet a unified decorative effect. Style: Agra Origin: India Size: 10 ft 03 in x 10 ft 05 in (3.12 m x 3.18 m)   « Less

Antique Sultanabad, Persia, circa 1900A complex allover 'Herati' pattern of vines, flowers, and serrated leaves repeats symmetrically across the ivory field of this elegant but unusual Sultanabad. Sultanabads are famed for their grand sweeping scale and sense of design, but this example is much more delicately proportioned and finely detailed. A vinescroll with circular palmettes or rosettes comprises the border design, set against a red ground that delineates itself effectively against the field. The extraordinary delicacy of the drawing is complemented by the soft, gentle tones of the palette. Style: Sultanabad Origin: Persia Size: 8. ft 02 in x 10 ft 05 in (2.49 m x 3.18 m)   « Less
