43712 Antique Bakhshaish, Persia, late nineteenth century - An allover array of highly stylized vine sprays and palmettes in shades of red and terracotta repeats across the abrashed blue field of this arresting antique Bakshaish. The drawing is irregular and improvisational, pulsating with spontaneous energy. The abrash or variegation of the field color gives an impression of depth like a limitless sky or sea. The main ‘turtle’ vinescroll border set on red with terracotta ground minor borders offers the perfect contrast to ground color of the field while retaining the tones of the vines and palmettes. Here we see the intuitive sensibilities of villager weavers at their best. Style: Bakshaish Origin: Persia Size: 8. ft 09 in x 11 ft (2.67 m x 3.35 m)   « Less

Antique Farahan ( Fereghan ) Persian Carpet, late nineteenth century - A lovely arabesque medallion provides a central focus for the richly detailed saffron ground of this sumptuous antique Fereghan. Similarly articulated cornerpieces occupy the ends. Thin wreaths in blue define small transparent medallions across the rest of field, alternating with red and blue palmettes to produce a dense but permeable design texture. A dynamic stylized vinescroll border on a red ground maintains this texture while contributing the necessary framing contrast to the field. Antique Persian Kerman Rug, circa 1900This magnificent antique carpet was woven over a hundred years ago by the master weaver Aboul Ghasem Kermani, whose signature appears in the upper main border. Truly worthy of the classic Kerman tradition that nourished him, he has given us a luxuriant decorative image of paradise shimmering with cool greens and saffron golds like the mosaics of an ancient mosque or church. Rows of elegant cypresses are poised amidst lush fields of fantastically rendered lilies, carnations, and somniferous poppies set like jewels in a golden crown. The jewel-like main border continues the texture and color of the field across the rest of the carpet, set off only by red guard stripes. For other carpets in our collection made by Master Kermani, see inventory numbers 2991, 3206, 3412, 3416, 2910, and 42108.
