The top has beautiful floral garlands amongst a pair of nesting Turtle Doves & Farming tools. The interior of this Painted Tea Caddy lid is also painted & has a single floating lid with bone handle. Unusual oval shaped sewing box veneered in Coromandel with ornate gilded brass carrying handle and front escutcheon. The interior of the antique sewing box contains its original blue silk lining with deep buttoned pad with a ribboned section for holding numerous sewing tools to the top lid. The base has the same deep buttoned cushion pad and around the interior it has seven pockets two of which contain a pin cushion & silk needle case. This sewing box also has several sewing items although not shown in the pictures but were found in the box & they comprise of: Bell Gauge dated 1847 by G.Chambers & Co, a hand made book emery board and three mending nylon compact. This exquisite box is an amazing piece of 19th century exotic craftsmanship. The box is made from ebony, inlaid with ivory, and veneered with porcupine quills. This example is one of the highest quality boxes of this kind. This box has a ton of ivory compared to most you will see for sale. There are no markings but from lots of research we believe this was crafted in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in the 1800's.
