English Needlepoint, circa 1900 - This magnificent antique English needlepoint carpet preserves a European tradition of adapting Oriental carpets going back five hundred years or more. A sage green trellis of fine acanthus leaves defines an allover pattern of staggered hexagon medallions filled in alternate rows by fleurs-de-lis and looped ribbon patterns. The soft tan, green, and saffron tones of the field are accented sparingly by the use of Chinese red floral forms between the medallions and in the details of the fleur-de-lis. A stately classical border of oblong cartouche medallions in tans and saffron nicely frames and resolves the entire composition. Antique Khotan, east Turkestan, early twentieth centuryAn allover Herati design of Persian origin comprises the field of this elegant antique Khotan. The rendering of the design, however, is strongly abstract and geometric, giving it a distinctive Khotan quality. The inner borders of flowers and palmettes also look to more westerly Oriental regions, although the hooked cartouches of the main border have a more Turkoman feel. Despite its varied background the uniform and restrained palette used across the entire carpet imparts a unified decorative impression to the piece as a whole. Two main scalloped medallions sit along the vertical central axis with smaller ogival medallions to either side, and pointed quatrefoil medallions disposed horizontally across the center. A welter of vines and tiny flowers fills the reminder of the soft blue ground between the medallions. Antique American Hooked Rug, This charming and unusual antique American hooked rug presents a remarkable blend of Old World elegance and New World folk art. The individual motifs - floral clusters and meanders - come from the Neo-Classical French tradition of Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets, while the allover staggered pattern recalls the design of traditional American patchwork quilts. The lovely cool tonality of the rug too is Neo-Classical French, although here it also seems to have the air of Early Americana. A wonderful decorative carpet with eclectic appeal and possibilities. Antique Heriz Serapi Persian Rug, c. 1900 - The fine weave and the delicate, almost classical curvilinear drawing distinguish this from most other Serapi carpets. The color harmony as well harks back to classical forerunners, making this piece truly one of a kind. Style: Heriz-Serapi Origin: Persia Size: 9. ft 09 in x 11 ft 11 in (2.97 m x 3.63 m)   « Less

Antique Oushak, Turkey, circa 1900 Antique Oushaks are prized among oriental rugs for their soft coloration and their extremely lustrous wool, and this piece is a classic example. A central medallion occupies the center of the field with cornerpieces radiating around it, while stylized vinescrolls fill the intervening space. But one really has to look to see all this amidst the soft tones of ivory tan, and gold. The rich detail of the border as well recedes into a fluid juxtaposition of tans and golds, making the carpet at once both rich and yet elegantly understated.
