Marques company, describes and illustrates the values and virtues of chemical products (pesticides, etc). for agriculture. Useful against mildou (which we have to assume is ÔmildewÕ en francais) and black rot (which the nameless poster artist didnÕt even try to translate), the happy sower and the plentiful crops in the poster certainly suggest that if one uses the product it will be to their great advantage. #1034   « Less

Brangwyn, Frank 30 x 56 This is truly one of the most magnificent posters I have had in the gallery - now, or ever. Despite the fact that it is in black and white, or perhaps because it is bereft of color, it is as powerful as any poster, large or small, as any other I have seen. The message is simple, and perhaps in our tobacco intolerant times, a little dated: but put yourself back almost a hundred years when smoking was really a simple pleasure, When it was one of the few simple pleasures 'our boys at the front' could take with them. And then put aside the text altogether and look at the image: You have, in the forefront, a group of soldiers - yes, enjoying a smoke - together as only men can be (in those times, before women were in the military) and see their comradeship. See on the lower right, the young men, happily going off to war, their bayonets slung over their arms, ready - no, willing - to go off to certain death. Then look to the left, in the background at the cathedral - going up in smoke (yes, yes, I get the irony...). It is, really, quite a masterpiece. Because the poster is unsigned I initially had a hard time finding its provenance, but like all posters, it has a history and a story: it was actually produced by a very well known and quite famous British artist by the name of Frank Brangwyn. #1035   « Less

11 x 13 One of the elements of Art Deco design which differentiates it from many/any other period, is it's bold use of color and typography: few other periods manage to integrate the use of such vibrant and dynamic blocks of color and design and to integrate them into a cohesive message which actually and effectively sells a product. This small gem for the French tobacco industry has all the hallmarks of excellence: it uses type to frame itself, in various colors, fonts and type sizes; it integrates the shadow of a man and woman to indicate that the product is able to be used by both sexes, and it has a dark background (as many Art Deco posters did) in order to grab and hold the viewers attention. This piece, though small, arguably has many of the design elements which can be found in much larger poster by the well known artists of the period like Cappiello, Vincent, Dion, and others. The Committee for Peace in Algeria (Comite pour la Paix en Algerie) was protesting what it called the fascism of the OAS against Algeria. This uncredited designer obviously had a working knowledge of Mid-Western winters (the poster was printed in Eastern Ohio) and was well aware of the less-than-cheerful attitude these prolonged periods of cold can produce. So, instead of trying to sex things up or provide something explosive inspired by the product's name, he sets down an animated snowman partaking in a bit of frosty tow-behind skiing, an activity that's only possible because of the anti-freezing power produced by Super-Pyro. It's lighthearted, fanciful and just the tiniest bit mischievous, qualities that will go a long way towards attracting a consumer smack-dab in the middle of an unrelentingly frigid season. #1040   « Less

Cappiello, Leonetto 48 x 64 Cappiello is considered to be one of the greatest posterists of his age. Cappiello's approach was always image association - the idea that you don't really remember the image of the product itself, but the image of something is associated with the product ... Cappiello was the first who thoroughly understood this, and he applied it with considerable diligence in about a thousand posters.'(Rennert) Born and raised in Livorno, Italy, . Encouraged by his brother, who was living in Paris at the time, Cappiello endeavored to sell his caricatures to magazines that would pay and support his art. He was so ambitious that he even approached Giacomo Puccini, the composer to ask if he could sketch him. He was successful and managed to submit the images to Le Rire magazine. Soon after, Cappiello became a sought after cartoonist and caricaturist. His style, simple lines with strong colors and an equally strong product message was evident in some of the first commissions he received: an 1899 album of pochoirs depicting famous actresses of the age shows clearly that even as a young man Cappiello had already developed a style which he would use, with incredible results, throughout his creative life. Cappiello's portraits and posters were playful and unique, a quality that bred his success. Cassandre, Adolphe Mouron 9 x 12 (Matted to 16,25 x 20) A.M. Cassandre was a painter, commercial poster artist, typeface designer, and stage designer. Born in 1901 in Charkov, Ukraine, Cassandre went to Paris in 1915, studying painting at the Æ’cole des Beaux-Arts and the AcadŽmie Julian. For a while he worked as a student at the Hachard & Co. press. In the 1920s A.M. Cassandre belonged to avant-garde circles and had many well-known friends in artistic, musical and social circles. A.M. Cassandre earned a reputation as the designer of bold, stringently geometric posters in the Art dŽco style. A.M. Cassandre received his first commission for a large poster from the Paris furniture store Au Bžcheron in 1923. He designed hundreds of posters - many of them, like this one, classics in the language of Art Deco design and decor. A.M. Cassandre designed posters in a stringently Constructive formal language that pays obvious tribute to the power of the machine and shows influences of Cubism and other Art Deco artists who were working in Paris at the time. Cassandre also developed typefaces and taught at the Æ’cole des Arts DŽcoratifs. He had his own art school until 1935. Between 1936 and 1939 A.M.Cassandre lived in in New York, where he freelanced as a commercial artist. In 1939 A.M. Cassandre returned to Paris, where he continued to work as a graphic designer, designed stage sets, and again turned to painting. In 1963 A.M. Cassandre designed the Yves Saint Laurent monogram. Cassandre's private life was hectic and often unhappy - often married, he had unsuccessfully attempted suicide before his final, successful attempt in 1968. This classic poster, measuring approx. 9 x 12 inches, illustrates the style for which Cassandre is best known - clean, precise and never using more detail than is necessary. He (or she) worked for the Folies Bergres, the Olympia and other top music halls for years, always coming up with humorous, attention-getting designs of this sort.With no particular information on this play available (lost in smoke as it were), we have to imagine that La Belle Otero was thinking of becoming a nun ... or something...
