DESCRIPTION: Inlay is a process of cutting small pieces of various woods and arranging them to form a pattern generally geometric. Inlay boxes or chests can be divided into two distinct categories: sophisticated work done by a skilled artisan and naïve folk art attempts by someone just wanting to make something beautiful. We are pleased to offer this Antique Folk Art Inlayed Work Decorated Walnut and Satinwood Wood Chest or Box from New England circa 1800s for your consideration. Intricate shapes are much more difficult to work with then rectangular shapes. The inlayed diamond, star, heart and spool shapes demonstrate the skill of the folk ark artisan that made the chest. The Inlayed Wooden Chest is made of pieces of alternating walnut and satinwood pieces. This Inlay Wooden Chest was handmade by a skilled artisan. The top is dome shaped, pegged, and attached to the body of the chest by original brass hinges. The chest still has its original brass handle with lion head base. There are two hooks and eyelets on the sides to close the top. The body of the chest is also made of alternating walnut and satinwood pieces with the corners finished with strips of mitered walnut wood. The corner walnut wood strips are attached to the sides by tiny braids. The front has a beautiful heart shaped escutcheon. The Inlay Wooden Chest has its original lock but the key has gone missing. The bottom is a single piece of walnut wood attached by age appropriate nails and screws. There is a slight loss on one of the back corner walnut strips. This does not effect the strength or integrity of this antique folk art chest and only adds to the authenticity of it being over a hundred and fifty year. The Antique Inlaid Dome Top Chest is in excellent strong condition with age appropriate wear. MEASUREMENTS: 14 Inches Wide, 9 Inches High, and 8 Inches Deep.   « Less

DESCRIPTION: During the 18th century the pipe was used during times of leisure and celebration. Primarily made of clay until the end of the 19th century, this fragile instrument needed safekeeping. American colonists crafted handmade boxes to hold their long stemmed clay pipes. The small drawer held loose tobacco. We are pleased to offer this Antique Colonial Wall Hanging or Table Top Paint Decorated Arch Scrolled Pipe Box with Dovetailed Drawer from New England circa 1700s for your consideration. The antique pipe box is handmade of white pine wood, which was prevalent in the northeast colonies until over harvested by the end of the 18th century. The antique pipe box is handmade with age appropriate square nails. The side panels are sloped and scrolled forming a decorative edge. The back solid panel is arched and scrolled with a center hole for hanging. The bottom is tapered on three sides to form beveled edge molding. The front panel has an inverted arch cut out with a decorative cut out decorative central notch. The front and back of the small tobacco drawer are dovetailed and the bottom is attached with square nails. There is an original brass knob on the front of the small tobacco drawer. The top cavity of the box is deep welled to hold clay pipes. The small drawer would have held an ample amount of tobacco. The antique wall hanging pipe box retains its original New England red stain that is so desirable. The antique pipe box is in excellent condition and has an age appropriate patina. MEASUREMENTS: 19 1/2 inches high, 5 1/2 inches wide and 4 1/2 inches deep.   « Less
